I Chose to Have One Child For My Mental Health

Parenthood is one of the most beautiful journeys, but it’s also one of the hardest. For me, choosing to have only one child wasn’t about finances, time, or convenience—it was about protecting my mental health and being the best parent I could be.

Why I Made This Choice

After my first child was born, my world changed in ways I never expected. Sleepless nights, postpartum anxiety, and the constant feeling of being “on” took a toll on me. While I loved my baby with every fiber of my being, I also realized that my mental well-being was suffering.

When conversations about having a second child started coming up, I had to ask myself an honest question: Could I handle that emotionally and mentally? The answer was no—and that’s okay.

The Pressure of “Only Child” Stereotypes

Society often pushes the narrative that kids need siblings to be happy and well-adjusted. I worried about that too. But the truth is, children thrive in loving, supportive homes, regardless of family size. An only child can be just as happy, social, and fulfilled as a child with siblings.

Prioritizing Mental Health Makes Me a Better Parent

Parenting is hard work, and it’s even harder when you’re overwhelmed or burnt out. By choosing to have one child, I can give my full attention and energy without sacrificing my mental stability. I can show up as the best version of myself for my child—and that matters more than anything else.

Breaking the Stigma

We need to normalize different family choices. Some parents want big families, others don’t. Some can handle multiple kids, some can’t—and that’s okay. What’s important is making the decision that works for your mental, emotional, and financial health.

To Other Parents Feeling the Same Way

If you’ve ever felt guilty for wanting only one child, please know this: you are not selfish—you are self-aware. Knowing your limits and prioritizing your well-being is one of the most loving things you can do for your child.

At the end of the day, being a good parent isn’t about the number of children you have—it’s about the love, care, and stability you provide. And for me, that means being a happy, healthy mom to my one amazing child.
